Sign Design of North America and
Australia
In North America and Australia traffic signs usually follow strict
colors and combinations. They are as follows:
1. Informational signs, these give directions, distance, and indicate
places such as town, city, and state names. These signs are green with
white lettering.
2. Signs used by parks, historic sites, ski areas, forestry, and
campgrounds are brown with white lettering.
3. Informational signs that are used for rest areas, food, gasoline,
petrol, and lodging are blue with white lettering.
4. Regulatory signs such as speed limits and parking signs are white
with red or black lettering. In some cases, they are red or black signs
with white lettering.
5. Warning or caution signs used to warn of school zones, ice on roads
or bridges, or dangerous curves are yellow with black lettering.
6. Temporary traffic control zones and detour signs are orange with
black lettering.
Several U.S. states currently use fluorescent orange signs for
construction zones, making them easier to be seen at night and during
inclement weather. They have also converted to fluorescent yellow-green
(FYG) in school zones, crosswalks, as well as for pedestrian, and
bicycle warning signs and fluorescent pink is sometimes used for
incident management warning signs.
